Lopez Tonight hasn’t been doing well in the ratings and took a particularly big hit when the series shifted to midnight. The current season is down by more than 30% in the 18-49 demographic when compared to season one.
There were actually rumors that TBS wanted to cancel George Lopez’s show last year but Conan O’Brien insisted that they stick with him. O’Brien was getting a lot of mileage out of the idea that someone had stolen his show and didn’t want to come across as doing the same to someone else. Now, it would seem that enough time has passed so that perception’s not an issue.
A TBS statement about the cancellation reads, “TBS has reached the difficult decision not to order a third season of Lopez Tonight. Thursday will be the final episode of the show. We are proud to have partnered with George Lopez, who is an immensely talented comedian and entertainer. TBS has valued its partnership with George and appreciates all of his work on behalf of the network, both on and off the air.”
When it was announced that O’Brien was coming to TBS and pushing Lopez Tonight to midnight, Lopez said, “I can’t think of anything better than doing my show with Conan as my lead-in… It’s the beginning of a new era in late-night comedy.” One has to wonder how he feels now.
What do you think? Will you miss Lopez Tonight? Should it have been cancelled or renewed for season three?
