Masters of the Universe fans will not see a new live-action film from Netflix. Per Variety, the long-gestating project has been officially killed by the streamer. Toy maker Mattel is shopping the project elsewhere and has confirmed it is no longer at the streaming service.

The following was revealed about the film:

“Insiders said that close to $30 million has already been spent on development costs and the cash that’s been shelled out to hold on to talent – like previously announced lead Kyle Allen and the film’s heatseeking directing duo Adam and Aaron Nee (“The Lost City”). Other knowledgable sources estimate all-in costs for development at twice that figure.”

The movie was to be based on the Mattel toy line and the popular Filmation animated series from the 1980s. The story follows heroic He-Man (secretly Prince Adam) and his friends on the planet of Eternia as they battle the evil Skeletor and his minions.

A 1987 live-action movie was a commercial failure with Dolph Lundgren leading as He-Man. Other Masters of the Universe animated series have been created over the years, most recently on Netflix.

What do you think? Do you want to see a new live-action He-Man film? Is Allen a good choice for the lead role?
