The drama is over for the characters of ABC’s Mistresses TV show. The summer drama has been cancelled so it won’t be returning for a fourth season in 2017.
Based on a British series of the same name, Mistresses revolves around the lives and loves of a group of sexy female friends. Over the course of the show’s four seasons, the cast has included Alyssa Milano, Yunjin Kim, Rochelle Aytes, Jes Macallan, Jason George, Brett Tucker, Erik Stocklin, Rob Mayes, Jennifer Esposito, and Tabrett Bethell.
It’s been a pretty tumultuous run for the summer drama. The series was filmed in Los Angeles for its first two seasons, with Milano as the lead. With soft ratings, the decision was made to move production to Canada and Milano decided not to continue.
Esposito joined the cast in season three as a replacement of sorts but then opted not to return in season four. Producers didn’t replace her character and stuck with the three original ladies but production moved back to Los Angeles, thanks to tax incentives.
Earlier this week, it was revealed that Kim wouldn’t be returning if Mistresses did come back for season five, leaving just two of the original ladies. Producers had been trying to see the network on a fifth and final season but apparently that didn’t work out.
Ratings-wise, Mistresses has never been a hit for the alphabet network but viewership numbers have remained fairly stable. The first year averaged a 1.2 in the 18-49 demographic with 3.80 million viewers. Season two averaged a 1.0 in the demo with 3.71 million and season three drew a 0.75 demo with 3.19 million. Season four averaged a 0.61 rating with 2.60 million.
