Modern Family: Ariel Winter Hopes for Season Nine Renewal

Modern Family TV show on ABC: season 9 (canceled or renewed?)

(ABC / Bob D’Amico)

While the Modern Family TV show has not been cancelled or renewed for a ninth season on ABC, actress Ariel Winter hopes to return as Alex Dunphy in season nine of the sitcom. Modern Family also stars Ed O’Neill, Sofía Vergara, Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Eric Stonestreet, Rico Rodriguez, Nolan Gould, Sarah Hyland, and Aubrey Anderson-Emmons.

Winter was a guest on ABC‘s The View today, which is shooting on location in Walt Disney World in Florida. And while she was mainly there to promote the April season four premiere of her animated Disney Junior TV show, Sofia the First, View co-host Sunny Hostin eventually asked, “Is Modern Family coming back for another season?”

Winter replied, “We’re not positive. I really hope so. I–we have so much fun making the show, and I really hope we come back. That would be wonderful.”

Hostin said, “Oh, you have to!”

Joy Behar turned toward Winter. “You don’t know yet, huh?”

Winter answered, “We don’t know.”

Sara Haines added, “I love Julie Bowen, too. Can you say, ‘Hi,’ for me?”

Winter said she definitely would, adding, “She is amazing.”

Then View moderator Whoopi Goldberg took the law into her own hands. “Hey, ABC. Quit fooling around. We love our Modern Family. Stop it now. Bring it back. Don’t make us come over there, ’cause we will.”

Even with the big Minnie Mouse bow in her hair, Goldberg didn’t shy from laying out her opinion to the House of Mouse, while broadcasting from the House of Mouse flagship park, on her House of Mouse-owned network talk show.

Will Modern Family Be Cancelled or Renewed for Season Nine on ABC?

Of course, the situation is more nuanced than Goldberg conveyed, because Modern Family isn’t an ABC Studios TV show. It is produced by 20th Century Fox Television. As we reported last week, 20th Century hasn’t finalized the ninth season contracts with Vergara, Bowen, Burrell, Stonestreet, Ferguson, and O’Neill. The hold-up seems to be between the studio and ABC, over the cost of another season.

Modern Family is The Alphabet Network’s top-rated show. Reportedly, the above-named stars earn in the neighborhood $350,000 per episode, as well as a cut of the studio’s profits, and are likely expecting a raise. Prior to season four, they renegotiated their salaries, only after suing 20th Century to release them from their contracts.

Still, a ninth season of the sitcom is more likely than not. Modern Family continues to deliever in the Nielsen ratings. Currently, season eight is averaging a 2.24 rating in the 18-49 year old viewer demo and 7.210 million viewers. It’s the network’s number one scripted series in the demo, and falls just behind Grey’s Anatomy, in terms of audience size.
