Week two came down a bit (7%) but the ratings were still very impressive and represent Modern Family’s second-best in the TV show’s history. The episode attracted a 5.7 in the demo and 13.45 million viewers. It’s easily ABC’s highest-rated series.
Season average: 6.0 demo with 14.17 million.

Episode 03-01: Wednesday, 9/21/11
ABC kicked off the season with a pair of episodes and they performed incredibly well, giving the series its highest ratings to date. The hour averaged a 6.1 in the 180-49 demographic with 14.53 million viewers. It easily won its timeslot and likely helped give the rest of the line-up a solid launch.


Reference point: The 2010-11 season averaged a 4.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 11.17 million viewers.

Note: These ratings are collected by the Nielsen company and are the final national numbers. These are different from the fast affiliate numbers which are just estimates of the actual ratings and are reported on by most other outlets. The final nationals are typically released within 24 hours of the programming or, in the case of weekends and holidays, a couple days later.
