Modern Family: Season Nine Ratings

Modern Family TV show on ABC: season 9 ratings (canceled or season 10 renewal?)

The Modern Family TV show is still ABC’s best rated scripted series in the 18-49 demo and falls just behind the top-ranked Grey’s Anatomy in terms of total viewership. Fans certainly don’t have to worry that the Alphabet Network will cancel Modern Family in the near future. They renewed it through season 10, back in May of 2017. When will the story come to an end? Will Modern Family be cancelled or renewed, after its tenth season? Stay tuned.

An ABC ensemble comedy, Modern Family stars Ed O’Neill, Sofía Vergara, Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Eric Stonestreet, Sarah Hyland, Ariel Winter, Nolan Gould, Rico Rodriguez, Aubrey Anderson-Emmons, Jeremy Maguire, and Brigitte the French bulldog. The sitcom revolves around three Los Angeles families who are interrelated through Jay Pritchett (O’Neill) and his adult children, Claire Dunphy (Bowen) and Mitchell Pritchett (Ferguson).

In season nine, with Alex (Winter) back at school and Luke (Gould) spreading his wings, Phil (Burrell) and Claire try to acclimate as nearly-empty nesters — although Haley (Hyland) is still living at home. Similarly, Jay, Gloria (Vergara), and little Joe (Maguire) have to get used to Manny (Rodriguez) being at college. Meanwhile, Cameron Tucker (Stonestreet) and Mitchell steel themselves, when Lily heads off to middle school as a newly-minted gifted student.

The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly in the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available — typically around 11:30am EST/8:30am PST. Refresh to see the latest.

For comparisons: The eighth season of Modern Family on ABC averaged a 2.10 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 6.881 million total viewers (live + same day ratings).

Note: These are the Live + Same Day Ratings which include “live” viewing plus delayed DVR viewing, up until 3am local time that same night. Ratings marked with an “*” are the fast affiliate ratings and will be updated with the Live+SD numbers when they are made available. Typically, networks get paid for C+3 ratings which includes DVR viewing within three days of the original airing when commercials are watched. Those numbers are rarely released to the press.
