The mystery is back. Six days ago, Mystery Science Theater 3000 creator Joel Hodgson set up a Kickstarter campaign to bring the cult comedy series back. Now, The Wrap reports the campaign’s goal of $2 million has been met and then some.
Nearly 20,000 backers have contributed to the Kickstarter fund as of reporting.
Created by Hodgson in 1988, Mystery Science Theater 3000 began on Minneapolis public access and featured him and his two robot sidekicks mocking cheesy B-movies. Soon, the show was picked up by Comedy Central and spent its last three seasons on The Sci-Fi Channel (Syfy) before being cancelled in 1999 after a run of nearly 200 episodes.
The series has remained a cult favorite, in large part due to syndication and the addition of a feature film and book spin-off.
With the Kickstarter funds, Hodgson hopes to reboot the series for at least a 12-episode season. Already, he’s tapped comedian Jonah Ray as part of the new team.

In a world where riffing has become as common as our national pastime, baseball. It makes sense: like baseball, everyone knows how to play, but sometimes it feels good to just sit back and watch the original movie riffing team take a whack at it. And if we came back, imagine all the riffs we could make about things like Uber or Cards Against Humanity!”
