“Plata o plomo?” Cold, enriching silver or searing, deadly lead?
The white-hot world of the 1979 Columbia-to-Miami cocaine trade continually offers the option and exacts the perilous toll on its partners, enforcers, traffickers, and competitors.
The trade is run or ravaged at unequal turns by the infamous Pablo Escobar (Wagner Moura). His position is almost mythical for the time — part Robin Hood and part murderous dictator.
Escobar watches mercilessly as his product consumes all it touches, as a lush rainforest is sacrificed to feed an insatiable fire.
Fighting the flames is the genial, leisurely DEA Agent Steve Murphy (Boyd Holbrook). Murphy immerses himself and his new wife Connie (Johanna Christie) into the overwhelming roles of soldiers in the US Government’s war on drugs in Bogota. Leading him into the blaze is his more seasoned, more influential partner, Javier Peña (Pedro Pascal).
Escobar’s tyranny does not go unchallenged by the Columbian people. Bullheaded upstarts from the Communist guerilla gang M-19 and the subversive affections of reporter Valeria Vasquez (Stephanie Stigman) both steal his attention.
Even his own taste for the spectacle of massacre threatens to disrupt his empire.
Murphy’s battles against Escobar’s enterprise are hard-fought, his victories few, but his narration of this unending saga of war is captivating.
