When ABC cancelled the Nashville TV series after four seasons, it seemed the song would end with no final refrain. After CMT rode to the rescue and picked it up (with an assist from Hulu), star Connie Britton left partway through season five, leaving fans wondering if cancellation once again loomed. Although the cable network renewed it in April of 2017, by November they announced Nashville would end with its sixth season. So, why track the ratings? Well, it keeps us out of trouble. It also gives us a good benchmark by which to assess the success of other TV shows, so stay tuned.
In the sixth and final season, with Rayna James (Britton) gone, Nashville centers on country music superstar Juliette Barnes (Hayden Panettiere). The CMT country music drama also stars Charles Esten, Clare Bowen, Sam Palladio, Chris Carmack, Jonathan Jackson, Lennon Stella, and Maisy Stella. Season six kicks off with Juliette still battling her depression, while Avery (Jackson) wants to figure out what comes next. Meanwhile, Deacon (Estes) and the girls attempt to adapt to life without Reyna, as Scarlett (Bowen) and Gunnar (Palladio) try to make it as solo-artists.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly in the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival.
