NCIS has entered itself into history. The CBS series can now say it is the first dramatic series to actually film an episode inside the White House. The West Wing only filmed outside the building.
During the May 3 episode, titled “Homefront,” Mark Harmon and the crew of the series visited the location to film a cameo appearance by Michelle Obama. She appeared on the series to help promote Joining Forces, which is an organization that helps with the families of veterans.
TV Guide spoke with Gary Glasberg, the executive producer of the series, about the appearance by the First Lady. He said the following:
“At the end of the day, this was really about supporting Joining Forces. It’s something that we’ve been aware of and conscious of in our research and storytelling, and this was an opportunity to really focus on it, so that people can be aware of everything it’s done. When we reached out to express our interest in the organization, the opportunity came up for the first lady to participate. Originally the idea was for her to come and spend some time with us, and then, to quote them, they invited us to come and film ‘in their house.’ And that turned out to be just a dream come true for us.”
NCIS has already been renewed for season fourteen, but fans will see some changes. Michael Weatherly will depart at the end of this season, and there have been some cast additions made. Those additions will make their first appearances on the series as season thirteen ends.
