Netflix has been on a roll lately, with the recent premieres of their several acclaimed original series like Master of None and Jessica Jones. But the streaming service’s chief content officer Ted Sarandos says Netflix is now looking for a series set in the contemporary Middle East, Variety reports.
Last month, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said he’d also be interested in developing an original anime series for the streaming service.
Speaking at the Dubai Film Festival recently, Sarandos said “what’s missing on the global stage is a really great scripted series about contemporary life in the Middle East.”
The comment comes as Netflix is expanding its reach across the globe. Sarandos announced that the streaming service would soon be available in the Middle East and North Africa regions. Currently, the website is only available in few areas of the Middle East like the United Arab Emirates.
Earlier this year, two filmmakers tried to get a Middle Eastern series picked up by Netflix. The campaign, called #NetflixListen, promoted their series Salahadin, a show about the famous 12th-century Muslim leader. The creators, Ahmad Hussam and Nick Armero, wanted an interview with Sarandos to pitch the historical drama. Apparently, the item was addressed at a Netflix board meeting.
What do you think? Would you watch a Netflix series set in the Middle East?
