CBS late-night had a momentary de-unblackening. Watch it above and below. Last night, Larry Wilmore, host of The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore, which was cancelled by Comedy Central in mid-August, took over The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on CBS.
Wilmore hi-jacked the opening monologue. When Colbert appeared to wrest the reins from his hands, Wilmore said, “I thought whoever leaves Comedy Central at 11:30 gets The Late Show,” referencing The Colbert Report. When Colbert set him straight, Wilmore asked if he wasn’t getting The Late Show because he is black. “Keeping it 100,” Colbert allowed, “A little bit.”

Wilmore expressed regret over the timing of The Nightly Show‘s cancellation, noting how many racially charged issues have risen to the fore, just since his show was taken off the air.
Wilmore and Colbert also discussed the discomfort of headlining the White House Correspondents dinner. Wilmore performed at it, this year. Colbert took the gig, 10 years prior, during the George W. Bush administration. Both comedians’ stints were perceived, by some, as controversial.
The Daily Show vets also discussed Jon Stewart’s appearance on The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore’s TV series finale. Stewart created and executive produced the cancelled Comedy Central talk show. Don’t miss the segment. It is insightful, yet unabashedly funny, like both Wilmore and Colbert.
