One Day at a Time: Netflix Reboot Casts Marcel Ruiz

One Day at a Time TV show on Netflix: season 1 (canceled or renewed?) Marcel Ruiz cast as Alex

The Wrap reports Marcel Ruiz has been cast as Alex in the Netflix reboot of One Day at a Time.  Alex is “a too-cute-for-his-own-good Cuban-American tween.” The report describes him as more “preppy than his sister, but also more vain. He’s the baby of the family and not above working the ‘good kid’ angle.”

Alex is the son of Justina Machado’s Penelope. Machado plays Brenda on USA Network‘s upcoming drama, Queen of the SouthRita Moreno, who recurs on The CW‘s Jane the Virgin TV series, was the first actor cast in the remake. Moreno plays Penelope’s mother

Last week, Stephen Tobolowsky was cast as Dr. Berkowitz. A widower, Berkowitz is Penelope’s boss and a potential suitor for Moreno’s character. Deadline says, “Penelope keeps his office in order and often his personal life, too, because he is a sweet disaster.”

The Netflix logline for the series calls it a reimagining of the Norman Lear classic. The reboot centers on a Cuban-American family. Penelope is a recently separated, former military mom. She navigates her new single life while raising her radical teenaged daughter and socially adept tween son. Penelope’s old-school Cuban-born mom [Moreno] “helps,”  as does her friends-without-benefits building manager, Schneider.

The original One Day at a Time TV show ran on CBS from 1975 to 1984. The late Bonnie Franklin played Ann Romano, the divorced mom of Julie (Mackenzie Phillips) and Barbara Cooper (Valerie Bertinelli). When they move to an Indianapolis apartment, the family is befriended by their building superintendent, Schneider (the late Pat Harrington).

Per Netflix press materials, writers Mike Royce and Gloria Calderon Kellett are executive producing with Norman Lear, and Michael Garcia. Brent Miller is set as co-executive producer. One Day at a Time is produced by Act III Productions, Inc., Snowpants Productions and Small Fish Studios in association with Sony Pictures Television.
