Opportunity Knocks: ABC Cancels Family Reality Series

While there’s news that Beauty and the Geek may return to the airwaves, another Ashton Kutcher reality series has been cancelled. ABC has pulled its low-rated reality series, Opportunity Knocks, after three episodes.

Opportunity Knocks brings a full-fledged gameshow to the front door of unsuspecting families. Spouses and siblings prove how much they know about each other and correct answers bring them rewards of cash, concert tickets, big-screen TVs and more. The game show is hosted by J.D. Roth and comes from Kutcher’s Katalyst Films and Roth’s 3 Ball Productions. The series is executive produced by Jason Goldberg, Karey Burke, Todd A. Nelson, Kutcher, and Roth.

Knocks debuted on September 23rd on ABC. The premiere attracted just 6.6 million viewers, landing it in fourth place for the timeslot. In the desirable 18-34 demographic, the show drew just a 1.5 rating and five share. That’s in sixth place for that demographic, lagging behind even the UNI networks’ Cuidado con el Angel.

In its second week, Knocks dropped to six million viewers but fortunately didn’t drop in the 18-34 numbers. This past Tuesday night’s episode saw the number of viewers drop once again, to 5.3 million. The 18-34 demographic inched down to 1.3 rating and a four share.

Three strikes is apparently enough for the alphabet network because Knocks is out. ABC has cancelled the series and is pulling it from the schedule immediately. For the foreseeable future, an hour recap of the preceding night’s Dancing with the Stars will take its place, leading into Dancing’s regular live results show.

Nine episodes of Knocks have been produced and three have been shown. ABC plans to air the remaining six at a later date, possibly in the summer, but won’t be ordering any more. Stay tuned!
