Retired at 35 revolves around a successful New York businessman named David (Johnathan McClain) who visits his father (George Segal) and mother (Jessica Walter) in a retirement community in Florida. While there, he quits his job and starts to re-evaluate his life. He also learns that his parents are separating and each exploring new ways of life. Others in the cast include Josh McDermitt, Ryan Michelle Bathe, and Marissa Jaret Winokur.
The sitcom’s pilot was produced at about the same time as Hot in Cleveland’s. But, while Cleveland went on to become a big hit for TV Land, Retired at 35 did not.
The first season debuted on January 19th of 2011 to a bit more than two million viewers but lost 26% of that audience by episode two. The first 10 episodes ended up averaging 1.36 million viewers with a 0.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic. TV Land renewed the show for season two with another 10 installments.
Some changes were made to the series (reintroducing David’s sister, Amy) in hopes that the ratings would improve. They didn’t. Season two ended up averaging 640,000 weekly viewers with a 0.2 rating in the demo.
While the cable channel has picked up its other original sitcoms — like Happily Divorced, The Soul Man, and The Exes — for additional seasons and episodes, TV Land has opted to drop Retired at 35.
The last episode aired on August 29th and is titled “My Best Friend’s Wedding.” It revolves Amy discovering that Brandon’s marriage proposal came as a result of his not wanting to be deported and that Jared is in love with her.
