It was recently reported that David Spade had been signed to star in a new ABC pilot, Bad Management. Last month, Patrick Warburton was set to produce and star in a new sitcom pilot for CBS, Jacked Up.
Typically, these roles would be in second position to their parts in Rules but the five stars’ contracts have all expired. Sony TV would have to renegotiate with the original cast for them to return to their roles and that seems highly unlikely to happen.
Members of the cast and crew have made it no secret that they haven’t appreciated their show being yanked around the schedule and used to fill in when another sitcom failed. Warburton and Spade have both said they expected the show to end this year.
In addition, the show’s ratings have been hitting some all-time lows this season and, a couple months ago, CBS cancelled Partners for hitting similar numbers. That’s hardly incentive for the network to want to negotiate for new deals.
Stranger things have happened but it looks pretty certain that we won’t be seeing an eighth season of Rules of Engagement.
But, what do you think? Is it time for the sitcom to end or would you like to see it continue? Should Sony and CBS make an expensive deal for another season? Would it be okay if only some of the cast returned?
