Supergirl: Preview TV’s Newest Superhero Series

Supergirl will premiere on CBS later tonight. This series is one of the most highly anticipated shows of the fall season. It will star Melissa Benoist as Kara, the cousin of Superman. Previews teased that she comes to Earth to help her cousin, but he does not need her help when she lands.

Television series will likely remember Benoist from her time on FOX series Glee. She was one of the new kids that came on the series when the original cast graduated and left Lima for their own lives. Greg Berlanti and those involved with the series wanted Benoist and only Benoist for the role of Supergirl.

TV Insider shared Benoist’s comments about taking on the superhero role for the CBS series.

“I love her optimism and her mission in this life, to help people and do good. The first time I put the costume on, it definitely felt like this transformation, like something inside of me clicked. It’s kind of impossible not to feel strong and brave and all those superhero things when you put this [suit] on.”

Benoist is not the only person on this series. Supergirl will bring Calista Flockhart back to the small screen as Kara’s boss. The series reunites her with Greg Berlanti, who worked with her on Brothers And Sisters. That series aired on ABC for five seasons before it was cancelled.

Flockhart spoke about working with Berlanti on this new series. TV Insider shared her comments.

“The writing is great, the part is fun and I am such a huge fan of Greg Berlanti’s that it became a no-brainer at some point.”

Mehcad Brooks, Chyler Leigh, and Jeremy Jordan also star on the series. For four of the cast members, it is a return to television after cancellation of their previous shows. For Leigh, her death on Grey’s Anatomy caused waves in the fan base when it happened at the end of season eight. She is now ready for the small screen once again.

Supergirl is getting noticed though. Even before the premiere, people are talking about the series. Jeb Bush even mentioned it at a recent event, according to People Magazine. He spoke about the series when he was asked about his favorite superhero.

“I kind of like the old-school guys, like Batman. Supergirl is on TV – I saw that when I was working out this morning. There’s an ad promoting Supergirl. She looked kind of … she looked pretty hot. I don’t know what channel it’s on, but I’m looking forward to that. That will make news.”
