Superior Donuts: Season Two Renewal for New CBS Comedy

Superior Donuts TV show on CBS: season 2Donuts may be bad for your diet but, apparently, the Superior Donuts TV show is good for CBS’ bottom line. The network has renewed the Monday night comedy series for a second season for the 2017-18 season.

Based on the Broadway play, the Superior Donuts TV show revolves around Arthur Przybyszewski (Judd Hirsch), a no-nonsense owner of a small donut shop in Chicago. He’s a gruff guy who realizes that times are changing and help comes in the form of a go-getter named Franco Wicks (Jermaine Fowler). Franco convinces Arthur that he can bring the shop and its irritable owner into the 21st century. Others in the cast of this CBS comedy are Katey Sagal, Darien Sills-Evans, David Koechner, Anna Baryshnikov, Rell Battle, and Maz Jobrani.

The series debuted on a Thursday night in early February, following an episode of The Big Bang Theory. The ratings were strong and the premiere garnered a 1.92 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 10.54 million viewers.

A few nights later, Superior Donuts moved to its regular Monday night timeslot and dropped 30% in the ratings, to a 1.35 demo with 7.34 million. The numbers have continued to slip downward with this week’s installment garnering a 1.0 in the demo and 5.22 million.

With such a slide in the ratings, the renewal of Superior Donuts is a bit curious. CBS does also produce the series so that likely plays a big part in the renewal. I suspect that they may use season two as a mid-season series or to replace a new comedy if it bombs in the fall. We’ll find out their schedule plans in May.

In any event, Superior Donuts will be back for the 2017-18 season and there are still five installments left in the current season.

What do you think? Do you like the Superior Donuts TV show? Do you think that it should have been renewed or cancelled instead?
