Unless something unthinkable happens, the Survivor TV show on CBS isn’t at risk of a mid-season cancellation. Despite declines over the years, it is a known quantity and proven Nielsen ratings performer. Still, they’ve introduced a new twist in the Spring 2018 cycle — one which harkens back to the show’s heyday. With this change, can they attract viewers who have abandoned the series? Will Survivor be cancelled or renewed for season 37? Stay tuned.
As always, host Jeff Probst returns to CBS for season 36, Survivor: Ghost Island. This time out, the competitive reality TV series splits the 20 new castaways into two groups of 10. The action centers on bad decisions of past players. The new contestants can be dispatched to a separate haunted island the networks says is, “…filled with Survivor relics from the previous 35 seasons of the show.” Ghost Island contains idols and advantages from past locations including Brazil, China, Africa, and Australia. Now, the new players have to struggle to reverse the curse.
This time out on Fiji’s Mamanuca Islands, the tribes are the Naviti Tribe (purple) and the Malolo Tribe (orange. Competing for the Naviti Tribe are Angela Perkins, 42; Chelsea Townsend, 24; Desiree Afuye, 21; Kellyn Bechtold, 31; Morgan Ricke, 29; Bradley Kleihege, 26; Chris Noble, 27; Domenick Abbate, 38; Sebastian Noel, 22; and Wendell Holland, 33. The Malolo tribe players are Jenna Bowman, 23; Laurel Johnson, 29; Libby Vincek, 24; Stephanie Gonzalez, 26; Stephanie Johnson, 34; Brendan Shapiro, 41; Donathan Hurley, 26; Jacob Derwin, 22; James Lim, 24; and Michael Yerger, 18.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly in the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. For comparisons: The 34th season of Survivor (Spring 2017, Game Changers) averaged a 1.71 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 7.980 million total viewers (live + same day ratings).
Note: These are the Live + Same Day Ratings which include “live” viewing plus delayed DVR viewing, up until 3am local time that same night. Ratings marked with an “*” are the fast affiliate ratings and will be updated with the Live+SD numbers when they are made available. Typically, networks get paid for C+3 ratings which includes DVR viewing within three days of the original airing when commercials are watched. Those numbers are rarely released to the press.
