Now that Survivor TV show is back for its 38th cycle on CBS, will its faithful audience return as well? Although it has lost some viewers over the years, it’s still an overall Nielsen ratings winner for the Tiffany Network, particularly in the demo. How much longer can it last, before CBS decides to take it out of the rotation? Will Survivor be cancelled or renewed for season 39? A renewal is the safe bet, but stay tuned. **Status update below.
Once again, host Jeff Probst returns to CBS for season 38, Survivor: Edge of Extinction. This time out, the competitive reality TV series welcomes 14 new castaways and four returnees, for a total of 18 competitors. In a twist new to this season, after players are voted out, they will get a choice between going home or to the “Edge of Extinction,” where they face tough challenges for a chance to return the game.
This time out on Fiji’s Mamanuca Islands, the teams are the Manu Tribe and the Kama Tribe. Competing for the Manu Tribe are Dan “The Wardog” DaSilva, 38; Reem Daly, 46; Rick Devens, 33; Wendy Diaz, 25; Lauren O’Connell, 21; Keith Sowell, 19; Chris Underwood, 25; Kelley Wentworth, 31; and David Wright, 44. Playing for the Kama Tribe are Joe Anglim, 29; Aubry Bracco, 32; Victoria Baamonde, 23; Ron Clark, 46; Julia Carter, 24; Eric Hafemann, 34; Aurora McCreary, 32; Julie Rosenberg, 46; and Gavin Whitson, 23.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly in the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. For comparisons: The 36th season of Survivor (Spring 2018, “Ghost Island”) averaged a 1.56 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 7.782 million total viewers (live + same day ratings).
Note: These are the Live + Same Day Ratings which include “live” viewing plus delayed DVR viewing, up until 3am local time that same night. Ratings marked with an “*” are the fast affiliate ratings and will be updated with the Live+SD numbers when they are made available. Typically, networks get paid for C+3 ratings which includes DVR viewing within three days of the original airing when commercials are watched. Those numbers are rarely released to the press.
