The Wonder Twins first appeared on The All-New Super Friends Hour on September 10, 1977. The animated show ran on ABC as a follow-up to 1973’s Super Friends. Superman, Batman, Robin, Wonder Woman and Aquaman are regular characters while other heroes like Hawkman, Apache Chief, Green Lantern, and The Flash are rotating guest-stars.
Also part of the team are shapeshifters Zan and Jayna, the Wonder Twins. They’re young “superheroes in training” from the planet Exxor. When the siblings touch, they can activate or deactivate their shape-shifting abilities. Zan can transform into various forms of water while Jayna can become different animals. Their pet is an impetuous blue Space Monkey named Gleek who frequently gets into trouble and adds comic relief.
The Wonder Twins appeared in various Super Friends incarnations over the years. They were also brought to the pages of DC Comics when the company began producing a Super Friends comic book.
When the comic book ended in the early 1980s, they were largely forgotten until they were revived and retconned for the comic series Extreme Justice. Sly references to the original characters have popped up elsewhere including a statue of the Twins being destroyed in an episode of the Justice League animated series in 2001.
There have been talks off and on for many years about the twins coming to the big screen but nothing’s come of it so far.
And now, it appears the Saturday morning cartoon characters are coming to Smallville, albeit in a slightly different incarnation. They’ll be appearing in the fifth episode of season nine called “Idol.” Twyla, who is a “pixie-punk teen,” will be played by Allison Scagliotti. Her brother Tanner, a “hot skater dude,” is played by 7th Heaven’s David Gallagher. The characters are able to communicate with each other telepathically and can transform into various forms.
Unfortunately, there’s no word if Gleek the Space Monkey will also appear. But, based on Smallville’s track record, you can be sure that producers will sneak in a few homages to the Wonder Twins’ campy history into the episode.
