The All-New Super Friends Hour: The Wonder Twins are Coming to Smallville

by Trevor Kimball, August 26, 2009

Wonder TwinsYou’d think that Clark Kent’s hometown was the center of the universe considering all of the super-powered beings that he’s run into over the years on Smallville. Clark (Tom Welling) hasn’t even become Superman yet and he’s already met heroes like Green Arrow (Justin Hartley), Black Canary (Alaina Huffman), Impulse (Kyle Gallner), Aquaman (Alan Ritchson), Supergirl (Laura Vandervoort), Cyborg (Lea Thompson Young), and Martian Manhunter (Phil Morris). And now, two more great heroes are slated to appear — Zan and Jayna, the Wonder Twins?

The Wonder Twins first appeared on The All-New Super Friends Hour on September 10, 1977. The animated show ran on ABC as a follow-up to 1973’s Super Friends. Superman, Batman, Robin, Wonder Woman and Aquaman are regular characters while other heroes like Hawkman, Apache Chief, Green Lantern, and The Flash are rotating guest-stars.

Also part of the team are shapeshifters Zan and Jayna, the Wonder Twins. They’re young “superheroes in training” from the planet Exxor. When the siblings touch, they can activate or deactivate their shape-shifting abilities. Zan can transform into various forms of water while Jayna can become different animals. Their pet is an impetuous blue Space Monkey named Gleek who frequently gets into trouble and adds comic relief.

The Wonder Twins appeared in various Super Friends incarnations over the years. They were also brought to the pages of DC Comics when the company began producing a Super Friends comic book.

When the comic book ended in the early 1980s, they were largely forgotten until they were revived and retconned for the comic series Extreme Justice. Sly references to the original characters have popped up elsewhere including a statue of the Twins being destroyed in an episode of the Justice League animated series in 2001.

There have been talks off and on for many years about the twins coming to the big screen but nothing’s come of it so far.

And now, it appears the Saturday morning cartoon characters are coming to Smallville, albeit in a slightly different incarnation. They’ll be appearing in the fifth episode of season nine called “Idol.” Twyla, who is a “pixie-punk teen,” will be played by Allison Scagliotti. Her brother Tanner, a “hot skater dude,” is played by 7th Heaven’s David Gallagher. The characters are able to communicate with each other telepathically and can transform into various forms.

Unfortunately, there’s no word if Gleek the Space Monkey will also appear. But, based on Smallville’s track record, you can be sure that producers will sneak in a few homages to the Wonder Twins’ campy history into the episode.

Once Smallville gets 10 (or more) seasons–200+ episodes, I’m happy. I just want it to be one of the longest lived SciFi series ever! I mean, there are so many untold stories. Imagine what we (SV fans) would be missing if SV gets cancelled. This is not your typical show!

Id like to see more super heroes added. Maybe Isis and Captain Marvel would be good for the ratings? Try adding some of their enemies such as Sutekh, Thoth, and Morgana the sorceress?

Smallville is definately different than the comics. And, the comics also have other diemsional spin offs. (For example: In one dimension Batman and Cat Woman get married and have a child. In another one, Superman gets so distrought that he vanishes forever.) Someone told me to think of Smallville as one of those other dimensions, which I think is pretty cool. Honestly, I am GREATLY ENJOYING SMALLVILLE! No other TV show has come close to entertaining the public, via some of our most loved Super Hero’s, like Smallville has. We are lucky to have it. I look forward to them… Read more »

@ diego:well if u haven’t noticed but superman is part of justice league and so is green arrow, martian manhunter. flash as well as others. only natural that clark kent would meet those characters.
and he does become the mild mannered reporter of the daily planet so they can’t just keep confused undecisive clark kent who will never let go of lana and realize lois is his soulmate and then become superman!
duh the season really has no where else to go and adding characters that are part of other team like teen titan etc is awesome!

Those stupid idiotic producer of Smallville, are they retarded? Mentaly chalenged? Their F&%$3ing IQ is 5? They used to have a very good show going on, but somewhere in the six season they just snap and blew a very good thing. For Christ sakes!!!!!! Please just finish the series with some dignity.
