Only two episodes of The Idol have aired, but there has been a report that the drama series has been cancelled and viewers will not see a second season in part due to a controversial sex scene. The rumors come from a recent Page Six report, per Deadline, and stated that the new drama was already cancelled and that HBO considered it a ‘limited series.”
In a rare move, HBO denied the rumor on social media and noted that the series’ fate has not yet been decided. The cable channel stated the following:
“It is being misreported that a decision on a second season of The Idol has been determined. It has not, and we look forward to sharing the next episode with you Sunday night.”
The premiere episode has reportedly surpassed 3.6M viewers in its first week of release. HBO says that’s better than the series premieres for both The White Lotus and Euphoria. In the traditional live+same day ratings, viewership dropped from 913,000 total viewers in the premiere, to 800,000 for the second episode.
Starring Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye, Lily-Rose Depp, and Troye Sivan, the new series follows a young pop star who falls under the spell of a nightclub owner. Others in the cast include Dan Levy, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Eli Roth, Hari Nef, Jane Adams, Jennie Ruby Jane, Mike Dean, Moses Sumney, Rachel Sennott, Ramsey, Suzanna Son, and Hank Azaria. The show was co-created by Sam Levinson, Tesfaye and Reza Fahim.
New episodes of The Idol air on Sunday nights on HBO.
