FOX had great success with the first 15 seasons of American Idol, but after it decided to give it a break for a few years, ABC picked up the format, while The Voice is a bonafide hit for NBC. Now FOX wants to put a new spin on the singing format. Enter The Masked Singer TV show. Does it have the right stuff to build up and audience, perform well in the Nielsen ratings, and earn future installments? Will The Masked Singer be cancelled or renewed for season two? A FOX game show based on a South Korean program, The Masked Singer features competing, singing celebrities. Nick Cannon hosts, with Jenny McCarthy, Nicole Scherzinger, Ken Jeong, and Robin Thicke serving as panelists. Celebrities go head to head in a singing competition, with a major twist: each performer is completely disguised in a fantastical costume, in order to conceal his or her identity. Each week, after the elimination, the departing singer reveals just who was making music behind the mask.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly in the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. Typically, networks get paid for C+3 ratings which includes DVR viewing within three days of the original airing when commercials are watched. Those numbers are rarely released to the press.
