The Walking Dead returned to AMC on Sunday night with the second half of season six, and the mid-season premiere had the feel of a season finale from the opening moments. The episode was big, and it saw some more deaths, a shocker for Carl that fans were waiting for, and it teased the arrival of Negan, who is being played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan.
Even with season underway, and a seventh season already assured, ratings have dipped for the series. Gale Anne Hurd is not worried about the rating drop for this series. She spoke with Deadline about mid-season premiere, and she shared her thoughts on the dropping ratings.
She said:
“Well, it’s still the biggest show on television and I don’t think that if you talk to any pundit during our first season, they would’ve predicted the show would become the most popular show on television. And certainly our sixth season maintains that. So, we continue to defy all pundits and it’s a real tribute to the fanbase that we have new viewers who have joined. You know, it’s a big commitment to start watching this show. I mean, it’s not like you have to watch six episodes. You have to watch over 60 episodes to get up to speed. In terms of the recent ratings, we end getting those viewers back with delayed viewing results. And Walking Dead is one of the few shows today that continues to maintain such high live viewership.”
Through the mid-season finale, The Walking Dead averaged a 6.68 in the 18-49 demo and 13.23 million viewers.
