NBC may have just ordered more episodes of Timeless, but it’s not all good news for the freshman series. Deadline reports the network and Sony are trying to dismiss an on-going lawsuit over the time-travel drama.
The action-adventure series follows a history professor, a soldier, and a scientist as they travel through time to stop a mysterious criminal. The cast includes Abigail Spencer, Matt Lanter, Malcolm Barrett, Goran Visnjic, and Paterson Joseph.
In September, Onza Entertainment sued NBC, claiming Timeless “was “ripped off” from Spanish drama El Ministerio del Tiempo (The Department of Time).” Now, Sony and NBC have fired back, saying the time-travel genre lends itself to overlap:
Time travel is a well-established genre in all forms of media. Moreover, in many examples of the genre, the generic story line involves characters whose time travel alters the course of history, often preventing bad things from happening.”
Onza is seeking a jury trial for the case. Meanwhile, Timeless is dipping in the ratings. So far, the show has received an average of 1.36 in the 18-49 demo and 5.659 million viewers. For comparison, the premiere netted 7.597 million viewers.
