To Catch a Predator: Chris Hansen Reboots Dateline Series with Kickstarter

To Catch a Predator

The predator of predators is back. After the cancellation of his popular NBC sting operation series To Catch a Predator (which ran as part of Dateline), host Chris Hansen has launched his own series of stings titled Hansen vs. Predator.

According to a profile from The New Republic, Hansen has used Kickstarter to fund the first-ever publicly funded sex sting operation, foregoing any network involvement. In 2008, the To Catch a Predator segments were cancelled by NBC due to heavy criticism and a high-profile lawsuit. The decision to use Kickstarter for a reboot came when Hansen received several messages from fans of the show demanding a return for the segments that lure, confront, and oftentimes arrest sexual predators.

Hansen’s new project has already had some success. In early October, after a four-day operation, he and a team of police lured and arrested 10 alleged child predators in Fairfield, Conn.

Hansen plans to continue Hansen vs. Predator as an online series and is currently looking for a network or platform to pick it up.

From Hansen, in The New Republic:

As Fairfield demonstrated, this is still very much a huge issue. We just made that the safest neighborhood in America.”

What do you think? Did you watch the To Catch a Predator episodes on Dateline? Would you watch Hansen’s new online series?
