Behind the Scenes

Ugly Betty is based on a Columbian telenovela entitled Yo soy Betty, la fea or “Betty la fea.” There are many other adaptations around the world but Ugly Betty is the most unlike the original.
The series received 11 Emmy nominations for its first season.
The series was originally being developed as a 2001 half-hour sitcom for NBC but didn’t move past the planning stages. ABC and producer/actress Salma Hayek came on board in 2004 and reworked it as an hour-long “dramady.”
