Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego: Rockapella Reunites for 30th Anniversary

carmen-sandiego

Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego was a cultural phenomenon that grabbed the attention of many children 30 years ago. The franchise started off as a game in 1985, but it also spawned a television series that aired on PBS during the early 1990s.  The series aired for five years between 1991 through 1995.

Mashable brought Rockapella to their studio recently to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the game’s release. The group performed the popular theme song that opened up the series.

The line-up of the group has changed since the series aired, but the original leader of the group back then, Sean Altman, also appeared to lead the group in the acapella performance.

Altman spoke about the experience and the history behind Rockapella’s involvement with the series. He revealed that the band was first approached in 1990 to audition for the role of house band on the children’s game show, and he owes their success to the fact that the song and their performance of it each day was such a prominent part of the show.

He also revealed a fun fact about the song that became the game show’s theme. Rockapella was inspired by a Jane’s Addiction song out at time called “Got Stealing.” The rift from the series inspired the theme.
