Will & Grace: How Will the Revival Deal with the Series Finale?

Will & Grace is returning, but how will the upcoming revival affect the show’s original series finale? Recently, TVLine‘s Michael Ausiello teased the NBC series reboot.

The 12-episode revival will see the return of cast members Debra Messing, Eric McCormack, Sean Hayes, and Megan Mullally. The sitcom originally ran on NBC for eight seasons before ending in 2006.

So how will the new Will & Grace episodes deal with the show’s series finale, which saw Will and Grace estranged for many years? Ausiello says the revival will largely ignore the estrangement storyline:

They’re (mostly) pulling a Roseanne. The finale posited that Will and Grace remained estranged well into their 50s. That will clearly be scrubbed from the history books. Completely eliminating Will and Grace’s now-teenage children (with Leo and Vince, respectively) from the revival equation will likely prove more of a challenge. But that’s what boarding school is for, right?”

Also, Messing revealed the new episodes will take place 11 years after the events of season eight:

All I know is that I was told that they’ve come up with a very creative way of dealing with how the show ended, and that it will be in real time. So it will be 11 years after.”

NBC’s Will & Grace revival is set to debut this fall.
