American Idol returns on Sunday night for its 22nd season (the seventh year on ABC), and viewers now know that one of the judges has plans to leave the show.
A singing competition series, the American Idol TV show features judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry, and Luke Bryan, with Ryan Seacrest as host. After the nationwide audition process, the contestant pool is narrowed through a series of elimination rounds. Once the contest reaches the semi-finals, although the judges offer their criticism, the decision to keep or cut a performer is up to the viewing audience. For a specified time window, fans may vote for their favorites via phone calls, text messages, and online. The winner claims the “American Idol” title and a recording contract.
In a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Perry announced her plans to depart from the reality competition series at the end of the upcoming season.
Per Deadline, she said the following about the ABC series:
“So I think this will probably be my last season for Idol. I love Idol so much. It’s connected me with the heart of America but I feel like I need to feel that pulse to my own beat.
[Richie and Bryan] find out tonight. They know that I have some things planned for this year. It’s going to be a very exciting year — for all pop star girlies.
I love the show so much but I want to go and see the world and maybe bring new music. Maybe I’ll come back if they have me one day.”
American Idol returns for its 22nd season on February 18th.
What do you think? Have you kept up with this ABC series? Are you sad to hear Perry is leaving?
