Is America’s favorite pastime making a comeback? FOX debuted Pitch in the fall of 2016. That scripted drama features MLB’s first female pitcher, but it seems to have grounded out in the ratings and may soon be cancelled. Now IFC is stepping up to the plate with its new Brockmire TV show, a scripted comedy set in the world of minor league baseball. Can they knock it out of the park, or will this be a ratings swing and a miss? So far, the cable channel thinks this sitcom is in its wheelhouse. Brockmire was renewed for season two on April 5th, the day of its linear premiere. Still, even renewals can be cancelled, so stay tuned.
An IFC scripted comedy series, Brockmire stars Hank Azaria as baseball announcer Jim Brockmire, Amanda Peet as minor league club owner Julia James, and Tyrel Jackson Williams as their tech whiz-kid intern, Charles. Jim was a successful Major League Baseball play-by-play announcer and “The Voice of Kansas City.” Then in 2007, he had a drunken, profane, explicit, on-air meltdown, after discovering his wife Lucy (Katie Finneran) was cheating on him. For 10 years, Jim was reduced to traveling the world and calling random events like cock fights in the Philippines. Now he’s back in the U.S.A. as the announcer for Julia’s Morristown, PA team, the Frackers. Can Jim reclaim his career, reputation, and love life? Will Lucy find a way to re-insinuate herself into his world? **Status update, below.
