Crazy Ex-Girlfriend: Season Three Ordered by The CW

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend TV show on The CW: season three renewalThe ratings may be low but The CW isn’t breaking up with Crazy-Ex-Girlfriend. The Friday night TV show has been renewed for a third season which will air as part of the 2017-18 season.

On the Crazy Ex-Girlfriend series, Rebecca Bunch (Rachel Bloom) was dumped by Josh (Vincent Rodriguez III) after a summer camp romance because he felt she was overly dramatic  and a little crazy. Some 10 years later, Rebecca’s a Yale and Harvard educated lawyer who’s been offered a partnership in a top New York firm. She and Josh run into each other and her feelings for him are rekindled. He’s moving back to California and she impulsively decides to do the same. Has anything really changed? The rest of the cast includes Santino Fontana, Donna Lynne Champlin, Pete Gardner, Vella Lovell, and Gabrielle Ruiz.

A romantic musical comedy, the ratings for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend were quite poor last season and they’ve gotten even worse now that The CW has moved it to Friday nights. Season two is currently averaging a 0.20 in the 18-49 demographic with 553,000 viewers. That’s down by more than 30% year-to-year.

While the series hasn’t attracted great ratings, it’s one of the few CW shows to attract much critical attention. The series has a high Metacritic score and Bloom won a Best Actress Golden Globe last year.

Today, CW President Mark Pedowitz said, “When you have great critical work and a critically acclaimed and award-nominated show like this, it deserves to be picked up… It has nothing to do with numbers. It has everything to do with [how] Crazy Ex, Jane the Virgin and the DC franchises have helped alter the perception of what The CW has become.”

The CW also renewed six other TV shows today — Arrow (season six), DC’s Legends of Tomorrow (season three), The Flash (season four), Jane the Virgin (season four), Supergirl (season three), and Supernatural (season 13).

We already know that Reign and The Vampire Diaries are ending this season. No Tomorrow and Frequency are expected to be cancelled and The Originals’ future will likely be decided once the ratings come in for the upcoming fourth season, starting in March.

What do you think? Do you like the Crazy Ex-Girlfriend TV show? Are you glad that it’s been renewed for a third season or, should it have been cancelled instead?
