Criminal Minds: Evolution will be missing one of the team when the series returns for its second season. Via his X account, actor Josh Stewart has revealed he will not be returning to the Paramount+ series.

Starring Joe Mantegna, A.J. Cook, Kirsten Vangsness, Aisha Tyler, Adam Rodriguez, and Paget Brewster, the procedural drama is a sequel to the long-running CBS series Criminal Minds. The story follows the FBI’s elite team of profilers.

Stewart has recurred as William LaMontagne Jr. since the second season of Criminal Minds and viewers saw his character marry Agent J.J. Jareau (Cook) in season seven.  Stewart appeared in almost all of the first season episodes of Criminal Minds: Evolution and it was revealed his character might have cancer.

The reason for Stewart leaving the series isn’t clear, but in a previous interview, showrunner Erica Messer told TVLine that Will’s diagnosis was “based on a true-life illness that we wanted to honor.” It turned out that the character had a treatable, inflamed thyroid, “but he’s not necessarily out of the woods forever,” Messer said.

Stewart’s post is below.

Production on season two is starting this month. The premiere date will be announced later.

What do you think? Have you watched this Paramount+ series? Are you sad to hear that Stewart will not be returning?
