CSI: Cyber: Cancelled by CBS; No Season Three

CSI: Cyber TV show on CBS: canceled, no season 3It’s the end of an era and the end of one of television’s most successful franchises. To little surprise, CBS has cancelled CSI: Cyber after two short seasons.

CSI: Cyber revolves around  the work of the Cyber Crime Division of the FBI. It’s a unit at the forefront of solving illegal activities that start in the mind, live online, and play out in the real world. This crime drama stars Patricia Arquette, James Van Der Beek, Hayley Kiyoko, Charley Koontz, Shad Moss, and Ted Danson.

The series debuted early last year and aired on Wednesday nights. The ratings were far from impressive but the network renewed it anyway and Danson, who had been starring on the original CSI, joined the cast.

For season two, CBS moved the procedural to Sunday nights at 10pm, the timeslot that CSI had previously held. Airings of Cyber were frequently bumped or delayed by football overrun and those interruptions certainly didn’t help the numbers. The network tried airing a couple episodes on Wednesday nights but few noticed.

Though the ratings were low, there was a chance that the series could still have been renewed. The CSI franchise is a big money-maker for CBS TV Studios internationally so business-wise it may have made sense to renew it. Perhaps playing into the decision to cancel was the fact that Danson had opted not to continue with the series if it had been renewed. He’s already committed to a new NBC comedy, The Good Place.

CSI: Cyber is the fourth and final (at least for now) member of the CSI franchise. The original, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, ran for 15 seasons before ending with a series-ending movie in the fall. CSI: Miami ran for 10 seasons and CSI: NY aired for nine.

What do you think? Do you like the CSI: Cyber TV show? Do you think that it should have been cancelled or renewed for a third season? Should CBS make a new CSI series someday?
