What’s This TV Show About?
A satirical VH1 dramedy, Daytime Divas stars Vanessa Williams, Tichina Arnold, Fiona Gubelmann, Chloe Bridges, Camille Guaty, Kristen Johnston, and McKinley Freeman. Based on the Star Jones novel, Satan’s Sisters, the story centers on the backstage drama between the cast of The Lunch Hour, a daytime talk show. Each weekday at noon, Maxine (Williams), Mo (Arnold), Heather (Gubelmann), Kibby (Bridges), and Nina (Guaty) talk about politics, entertainment, lifestyle topics, and gossip like true friends. The real action, though, happens off the air and features the hosts’ secret affairs, power struggles, schemes, and tantrums.
Season One Ratings
The first season of Daytime Divas averaged a 0.43 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 1.00 million viewers.
On November 1, 2017, Daytime Divas was cancelled so there won’t be a second season. Could it be revived some day? Stay tuned for further updates.
Telly’s Take
Because reality TV series make up much of VH1’s programming slate, it’s a little harder to gauge the cable network’s cancellation/renewal threshold. In addition, parent-company Viacom is in the midst of shaking things up. It is rebranding Spike TV as Paramount Network in 2018 and has shifted Heathers and American Woman from TV Land, to help launch the rebrand. It renewed VH1’s The Breaks, but is moving the hip-hop drama to BET for its second season. In other words, there are more factors at play here, than usual.
I expect Daytime Divas will get a second season. It not only has Vanessa Williams’ star power, it also has some buzz, because of Star Jones’ nine season stint on The View. While her book, Satan’s Sisters, isn’t actually a roman à clef about the ABC talkshow, most of the characters are pseudo-types of some View co-hosts, past and present. What’s more, Joy Behar, Sunny Hostin, Jedediah Bila, and Sara Haines will guest star in the first season, and Williams and Jones plugged Daytime Divas on The View, ahead of the series premiere.
