Telly’s Take

Because Nielsen doesn’t report on streaming TV series, it is difficult to gauge how a Netflix show is doing, unless they publicize its performance. So let’s look at what we do know. The Friends From College cast has some fairly big names, and Kate McKinnon, Greg Germann, Ike Barinholtz, and Seth Rogen are guest starring in the first season. That’s in the show’s favor, and could be enough to draw a renewal-worthy audience.

In the “con” column, are some lack-luster to downright negative critical reviews. Variety‘s Maureen Ryan says that it, “…flails wildly and unsuccessfully in search of a reason to exist.” Meanwhile Alan Sepinwall’s Uproxx review is entitled, “You Won’t Want To Hang With Netflix’s ‘Friends From College’.” Similarly, The Washington Post‘s Hank Stuever says the comedy, “…makes embarrassingly poor use of a cast that deserves to be in a better show.” Talking about whetting my appetite! Still, poor critical reviews don’t necessarily sway Netflix. Case in point: Fuller House. I’ll keep an eye on any developments and share them here, so subscribe for free updates on any Friends From College cancellation or renewal news.
