The Great Indoors: Cancelled? CBS Moves the End of Season One to Mondays

The Great Indoors TV show on CBS: season 1 (canceled or renewed for season 2?) CBS moves The Great Indoors TV series from Thursdays to Mondays.

Last month, CBS renewed 18 TV shows — including freshman comedies Kevin Can Wait, Man with a Plan, and Superior Donuts — but while it wasn’t cancelled, The Great Indoors also wasn’t among the renewals. Now, the Tiffany Network has moved the remaining season one episodes of The Great Indoors from Thursdays to Monday nights.

A workplace sitcom, The Great Indoors features adventure reporter Jack Gordon (Joel McHale), who finds himself surrounded by Millennials, after being reassigned to a stifling desk job. Stephen Fry, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Susannah Fielding, Chris Williams, Christine Ko, and Shaun Brown also star. According to the CBS press release, the network will air reruns of The Big Bang Theory in The Great Outdoors timeslot.

The Great Outdoors: A Look at the Ratings

The first season of The Great Indoors is averaging a 1.51 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 7.32 million viewers. The Great Indoors is currently ranked fifth among scripted CBS TV shows when sorted by its demo average and 13th in terms of total audience size. Those season averages don’t tell the whole story, though.

Although The Great Outdoors pilot earned a 1.91 rating in the demo and drew 8.814 million viewers, it has been downhill since then. The comedy series hit a season low with episode 1.16 on March 27th, which only averaged a 1.00 rating and drew 4.119 million total viewers, although it has rallied a bit in the past few weeks.

CBS has pretty high standards for its comedies, so considering the scheduling in change, in light of the recent ratings decline, certainly makes it seem somewhere between possible and likely that there will be no season two of The Great Indoors. The question remains: are they moving it to Mondays to save it, or to let it die a swift death?
