Grey’s Anatomy is getting ready for season 13 in the fall, and many television viewers that do not watch the series wonder how the ABC medical drama has managed to stay on top of the charts for so long – especially after the exit of Patrick Dempsey during season 11.
Jason George spoke about the longevity of the series in a new interview with Digital Spy. The series just wrapped season 12 in the UK this week. He said the following:
“I honestly think it starts with Shonda Rhimes number one. Number two – Ellen Pompeo. Shonda is not only a brilliant writer, but she’s also a brilliant businesswoman and manager. And Ellen is really the leader of the team. If I make a football analogy, Ellen is the quarterback you dream for. Shonda knows how to staff this out – she brings in new showrunners all the time. And she’s brought in new castmembers to let it breathe.”
George also spoke about the fan reaction to Derek’s death and the way the series survived that huge exit. He said:
“Everybody under the sun said they were done and weren’t gonna watch this season because she had the audacity to create drama on a drama TV series. She knew that was gonna happen, and was prepared to take all those slings and arrows and bullets, she did it, and then every one of those single people watched, and a few more! That kind of bravery and leadership makes everyone realise you don’t get to slack off just because it’s season 12.”
Ellen Pompeo signed a new deal earlier this month. The only exit from the cast this season is Sara Ramirez. She announced her departure after the season finale aired last month.
