Happy Endings: Does ABC Want to Cancel the Sitcom?

happy endings to be cancelled?ABC’s Happy Endings returns to the schedule this Friday night after being off the air for two months. It’s likely to be the TV show’s last chance to escape cancellation.

Though the series has a loyal fanbase, Happy Endings has never been a big hit. In its first season, the show averaged a 1.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic and just 3.99 million total viewers. A victim of poor scheduling, ABC decided to give Happy Endings a second chance and renewed it.

Last season, aided by having ABC’s top show Modern Family as a lead-in, Happy Endings performed much better — averaging a 2.7 demo rating and 6.18 million.

This season, ABC decided to see if Happy Endings could stand on its own by giving it a Tuesdays at 8pm timeslot. It couldn’t. Paired with Don’t Trust the B in Apartment 23 (already cancelled), Happy Endings hit new series lows.

The network tried running the shows twice a week, adding Sunday airings. It didn’t really help and now Happy Endings is the lowest-rated show on the network, averaging a 1.3 in the demo and 3.49 million viewers.

ABC seems committed to keeping a pair of comedies on Friday nights and has had moderate success with Last Man Standing and Malibu Country.

If Happy Endings can match or surpass Last Man Standing’s numbers, ABC will surely renew it.

Given Happy Ending’s numbers this season however, that seems unlikely. If the sitcom still has a loyal fan base, their numbers have certainly dwindled. At least ABC is giving the show another chance before pulling the plug.

ABC has launched a new “save our show” ad campaign and is being unusually candid. If viewers don’t want the show to be cancelled, they need to start watching on Friday nights.

Will the campaign help or is the show’s fate already sealed? We’ll have to wait and see.

What do you think? Has ABC already decided to cancel Happy Endings? Do you think the Friday night timeslot is a good idea? Will you be watching?
