Lanterns has found its leads. HBO has announced that Kyle Chandler (Bloodline) and Aaron Pierre (Genius: MLK/X) will star as DC superheroes in a mystery series setting.

HBO ordered Lanterns to series in 2023, replacing the previously announced Green Lantern series from Greg Berlanti.

THR revealed the following about the plot of the upcoming live-action series:

Lanterns is said to have a gritty, True Detective vibe and follows Hal Jordan, a legend amongst the space police force known as the Green Lanterns, as he reluctantly mentors Stewart, a younger Green Lantern. The two intergalactic cops get drawn into a dark, Earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

Chandler will play Jordan, while Pierre will star as Stewart in the series.

The Hal Jordan character debuted in 1959, and his Green Lantern quickly became a staple of DC Comics’ Silver Age, with his own title and as a member of the Justice League. According to artist Gil Kane, he was patterned after Kane’s former neighbor, Paul Newman. Jordan was the focus of the Green Lantern feature film starring Ryan Reynolds.

John Stewart was introduced in 1972 and was the first African-American superhero in DC Comics. He was initially patterned after actor Sidney Poitier. The character became a Green Lantern when another corp member was injured. Stewart is a prominent member of the Justice League in the team’s animated adventures, usually voiced by Phil LaMarr.

The premiere date for Lanterns will be announced later.
