NBC and Dick Wolf have forged a lucrative partnership with both his Law & Order and Chicago TV show franchises. His newest entry is the Law & Order True Crime TV show. The new series doubles down on that “ripped from the headlines” feel, by recreating stories featuring real-life crimes, victims, and criminals. As FX‘s American Crime Story has shown, the public still has quite an appetite for true crime dramas. Will season one, Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders, be just what the customer ordered? A scripted, true crime anthology drama, each season of Law & Order True Crime chronicles a historical crime and all the players involved. The first season on NBC, The Menendez Murders, stars Edie Falco, Gus Halper, Heather Graham, Josh Charles, Miles Gaston Villanueva, Anthony Edwards, Julianne Nicholson, Constance Marie, Chris Bauer, Carlos Gómez, Sam Jaeger, Cliff Chamberlain, Sterling Beaumon, Molly Hagan, Dominic Flores, Lolita Davidovich, Elizabeth Reaser, Larry Cedar, and Ezra Buzzington. It follows the aftermath of the slaying of entertainment executive José Menendez (Gómez) and his wife, Mary a.k.a. “Kitty” (Davidovich), Defense attorneys Leslie Abramson (Falco) and Jill Lansing (Nicholson), defend their sons, Lyle (Villanueva) and Erik (Halper) Menendez, against murder charges.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly in the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival.
