Will there be more seasons of Modern Family and The Middle? ABC chief Channing Dungey recently discussed the season nine renewal chances for the long-running TV series, Deadline reports.
Both sitcoms are currently in their eighth season on the Alphabet Network, with Modern Family still holding as ABC top-rated scripted TV show for the 2016-2017 season. The Middle is not too far behind, placing sixth out of the network’s 19 scripted series.
During this week’s Television Critics Association press tour, Dungey said negotiations for a ninth season of both The Middle and Modern Family will be complicated but the network is hopeful:
Talks are ongoing. Anytime you are in a renegotiation, especially at this level, it’s going to be complicated. What I will say is there is a real enthusiasm on our side and on 20th’s side to try to make something happen. We all want to see the show come back next season.”
And what about more seasons beyond season nine? Dungey says the network is open:
I am am definitely open to more. But the first hurdle is figuring out next year.”
