Once Upon a Time: Season Seven Renewal Despite ABC Star’s Exit

Once Upon A Time TV show on ABC: season 7 renewal (canceled or renewed?)

(ABC / Jack Rowand)

Magic is afoot. Despite the departure of star Jennifer Morrison and her central character — Emma Swan — ABC has renewed its Once Upon a Time TV show for a seventh season. It seems there will be a happy ending for those fans who are willing to watch the fairy tale of Princess Emma, without Princess Emma. The rest of us will be able to look forward to the single episode for which she is contracted, and will spend our time muttering, “Magic always comes with a price.” We kid, Oncers. Congrats on the pickup.

The season seven renewal comes just three nights before the Once Upon a Time season six two-hour finale, “The Final Battle.” Earlier this week, after Morrison announced her departure, there was speculation that without her, Ginnifer Goodwin, and Josh Dallas, ABC might pass on another installment. Fortunately, for fans, Lana Parrilla, Robert Carlyle, and Colin O’Donoghue remain aboard the fairy tale fantasy drama. Reportedly, they’ll be joined by Andrew J. West, in an undisclosed role.

As we’ve been reporting since January, ABC boss Channing Dungey has been teasing that Once Upon a Time, season seven, will be a whole reset of the series. It seems Regina, Rumple, and Hook will all still be there. We are unsure who West will play, but our money is on an older Henry (Jared Gilmore’s character). We just hope they do Emma’s storyline justice.

Deadline has confirmed the OUAT season seven renewal. The news outlet also mentioned that Goodwin and Dallas could reprise the roles of Snow White and Prince Charming (aka David), as guest stars, in the upcoming installment.

Once Upon a Time: A Look at the Ratings

The sixth season of Once Upon a Time is averaging a 0.94 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 3.17 million viewers. Compared to season five, the show is down 31% and down by 28%, respectively. While its ratings have fallen quite a bit, it’s still doing far better than some other ABC TV shows (some of which the network cancelled tonight, and we’re getting to them), it’s still a far more solid show, so the renewal makes sense.

What do you think? Did you expect ABC has to renew its Once Upon a Time TV series for season seven? Will you be tuning in, even without Jennifer Morrison’s Emma? Sound off, in the comments.
