What’s This TV Show About?

A USA Network sitcom, Playing House stars Lennon Parham as Maggie Caruso and Jessica St. Clair as Emma Crawford. After Maggie discovers her husband Bruce (Brad Morris) is having an affair, Emma leaves her lucrative job in China, to help her lifelong best friend raise her daughter, Charlotte, back in their hometown of Pinebrook, Connecticut. In season three, it is Maggie who rides to Emma’s rescue. USA Network teases that their friendship will face its biggest challenge yet.

Telly’s Take

Predicting if USA Network will cancel or renew Playing House for season four may prove to be more difficult than usual. Although the third season kicked off with a two-episode linear premiere on June 23rd, USA maked the entire season available On Demand, on USA Network, and on the USA Now App, and we don’t have access to viewership numbers on those platforms (unless the networks decide to publicize them).

Whether the new distribution model will boost viewership remains to be seen. Flying blind, I’m wondering if this won’t be the final season for this comedy series, though. Season two premiered nearly two years ago, in August of 2015. Usually overly long hiatuses cost shows some viewers. On the other hand, other cable networks have found success releasing an entire season at once. The strategy worked with Freeform’s TV series, Beyond. For now, I’ll keep an eye for new new developments. Subscribe for free updates on any Playing House cancellation and renewal news.

10/30 update: There will be no season four. Playing House has been cancelled by USA Network. Details here.
