Smallville follows the exploits of young Clark Kent (Tom Welling) in his days prior to slipping on blue tights and red shorts. The current cast includes Welling, Allison Mack, Callum Blue, Cassidy Freeman, Erica Durance, and Justin Hartley.
The series moved to Friday nights this season and, while viewership is understandably down, it’s improved the CW network’s performance on that little-watched night.
According to the network, Smallville has increased the averages by 67% among adults 18-34 (1.5 rating), 200% in men 18-34 (1.8 rating), 75% in adults 18-49 (1.4 rating), 183% in men 18-49 (1.7 rating) and 74% in total viewers (3.12 million).
Though the show’s strong suit isn’t the CW network’s targeted demographic of young women, the renewal was expected — especially in light of the rest of the network’s schedule. There’s no word yet if season 10 will be the show’s last.
Smallville joins previously renewed The Vampire Diaries, Gossip Girl, 90210, Supernatural, and America’s Next Top Model.
The CW shows whose fate are still up in the air are One Tree Hill, Melrose Place, and Life Unexpected. Of the three, One Tree Hill seems to have the best chance for survival. Life Unexpected started decently but has been dropping. Meanwhile, Melrose Place is considered to be essentially dead.
What do you think? Are you glad that Smallville is returning or is it time for the series to end?
