VICIOUS Returns with Special Hour-Long Series Finale, June 19, 2016 on PBS
– Derek Jacobi and Ian McKellen Star in Critically Acclaimed Comedy –
ARLINGTON, VA; April 28, 2016 – PBS and Endemol Shine International today announced that ITV’s acclaimed British sitcom VICIOUS will return to PBS for one final hurrah, after its two-season run. A special one-hour series finale will air Sunday, June 19, 2016, 8:00-9:00 p.m. ET, followed by the premieres of “Endeavour, Season 3” on MASTERPIECE at 9:00 p.m. ET, and THE TUNNEL at 10:30 p.m. ET, rounding out Sunday night dramas on PBS.
Ferociously funny and heartfelt as ever, the special VICIOUS episode, titled “A Year,” charts a year in the lives of the beloved leading partners Freddie (Ian McKellen) and Stuart (Derek Jacobi), and their friends Violet (Frances de la Tour), Ash (Iwan Rheon), Penelope (Marcia Warren) and Mason (Philip Voss).
The episode opens in springtime, when Freddie and Stuart attempt to hide their recently gained inheritance, while Violet faces financial troubles after her recent divorce and Ash struggles to meet his rent. Signs of Freddie and Stuart’s expenditures soon threaten the pretense as their home is overrun with guests. In summer, it’s Freddie’s birthday party and an unexpected card arrives. Stuart prepares a very special present. Violet has a surprising announcement, and Ash and Penelope share a secret. Then, in autumn, Ash arrives at Freddie and Stuart’s flat with news, while in winter the gang gathers round at Christmas to experience Freddie’s latest acting job.
“It has been such a delight to work with producer Brown Eyed Boy and Endemol Shine International partners on two successful seasons of this witty and feisty British import,” said Beth Hoppe, Chief Programming Executive and General Manager, General Audience Programming, PBS. “We are so pleased to have shared laughs with our PBS audiences and we know that this finale will garner the same heartfelt response.”
VICIOUS made its U.S. debut in June 2014 to critical acclaim, with the New York Times calling it “convulsingly funny,” the New York Daily News marking it “a breath of fresh television air” and Entertainment Weekly describing it as “bitingly funny.”
“We are thrilled by the overwhelmingly positive response that VICIOUS has received from U.S. viewers,” said Gary Janetti, creator and executive producer. “With this final episode, viewers can expect both hilarious and emotional moments with Freddie, Stuart and the rest of the gang over the span of one entire year.”
Gary Janetti (“Will & Grace”, “Family Guy”) is the creator, showrunner and executive producer of VICIOUS, which is also produced by Gary Reich (“How Not to Live Your Life” and “Three Non Blondes”), and directed by Ben Kellett for the finale episode. VICIOUS is a production of Brown Eyed Boy in association with PBS and Nickelby Inc.
Endemol Shine International represents VICIOUS, holding the international distribution rights.
The VICIOUS series finale will be available for viewing on PBS.org for a limited time after the national broadcast.
