An action-comedy-drama, Lethal Weapon stars Wayans, Seann William Scott, Kevin Rahm, Johnathan Fernandez, Michelle Mitchenor, Keesha Sharp, Dante Brown, and Chandler Kinney. The series follows Detective Roger Murtaugh (Wayans), his LAPD colleagues, and his family at home. After a tragedy, Murtaugh is partnered with Detective Wesley Cole (Scott), a former CIA operative who’s been everywhere and seen everything. How long will it take him to adjust to Los Angeles?
Earlier this month, Wayans announced that he planned to depart Lethal Weapon after the 13th episode of the current third season. Apparently, FOX had been considering ordering a two-episode back-order and the show’s producers and the network execs were surprised when Wayans made his announcement.
A 58-year-old diabetic, Wayans said that the 16-hour days on the set and physical demands of doing an action series are too much for his health. Though he did not mention it at the time, Wayans’ daughter and mother recently underwent surgeries and he couldn’t be present for them due to his schedule on Lethal Weapon.
Wayans and producers have now met about his concerns. They’ve reportedly worked out an adjusted filming schedule and special meals will be brought in. In turn, Wayans has agreed to stay on for the two extra episodes. According to Deadline, “he has not shut the door completely to doing a possible fourth season should the series get renewed by FOX”.
A trio of episodes from the third season have aired thus far and they’ve averaged a 0.76 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 3.17 million viewers. Compared to the second season, that’s down by 23% in each category. Lethal Weapon is currently tied for last place among all of FOX’s current scripted series.
Given the current numbers, which have been inching downward, it seems unlikely that FOX will want a fourth season of the series. If Wayans still wants to depart after these 15 episodes, I’m guessing that would seal the show’s fate since it would be the second high-profile cast change (after Clayne Crawford’s firing) within a year.
What do you think? Are you still watching the Lethal Weapon TV show? Do you think that it will be renewed for a fourth season, with or without Wayans?
