During the first half of the 2017-18 television season, only one new comedy premiered on ABC — The Mayor — which earned such low ratings, that it was cancelled mid-season. Now that spring is in the air, the Alphabet Network is lightening up a bit, with some more new chances to laugh, but the shows they’re introducing feature fan-favorite familiar faces. In addition to the Roseanne TV series revival, The Office vet, Jenna Fischer is back, in Splitting Up Together, too. Enter Zach Braff, in his new Alex, Inc. TV show. Is the Scrubs alum just what the doctor ordered? Will Alex, Inc. be cancelled or renewed for season two? Stay tuned. *Status update below.
A family sitcom, based on the “StartUp” podcast by Alex Blumberg, Alex, Inc. centers on Alex Schuman (Braff). In addition to Braff, the ABC TV series cast also includes Tiya Sircar, Hillary Anne Matthews, Michael Imperioli, Audyssie James, and Elisha Henig. In addition to being a husband and father of two, Alex is a successful radio journalist. One day, he decides quits his job in order to found his own podcast company. His wife, Rooni (Sircar) — a lawyer — is skeptical, initially. Still, Rooni, their kids, Ben (Henig) and Soraya (James), Alex’s cousin Eddie (Imperioli), and former producer Deirdre (Matthews), rally around him and put their everything into his launch.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly in the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. Ratings marked with an “*” are the fast affiliate ratings and will be updated with the Live+SD numbers when they are made available. Typically, networks get paid for C+3 ratings which includes DVR viewing within three days of the original airing when commercials are watched. Those numbers are rarely released to the press.
