The third season premiere brought in just a 1.8 rating in the coveted 18-49 demographic, way down from the 3.4 rating from the start of season two. It looked like the poor debut might be a fluke but the three subsequent episodes haven’t performed much better. The fourth episode of the season registered a 2.1 rating, a lower number than the show had seen any time during seasons one or two.
Still, I don’t think the show is in danger of being cancelled. At the end of season three, Hawaii Five-0 should have about 70 episodes. That’s roughly enough for a syndication package but another season of 23-24 episodes would make a better one. CBS produces the series and they’ve already sold off-network rights so TNT can start airing it beginning Summer 2014. With CBS having financial incentive to keep the show going, I suspect Hawaii Five-0 is safe.

These charts incorporate the daily final CBS show ratings (reported by Nielsen) and are sorted by the 18-49 demographic. Network advertisers typically prize those viewers most and so will pay more to reach them. There’s lots of information that the networks take into consideration when cancelling or renewing a TV series but the ratings are the biggest factor. The higher the ratings, the better chance that the show will be renewed. And yes, they take it into account when a show airs on a Friday or Saturday night.
